Winemaking Notes

Our ongoing love affair with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvédre finds a new expression with Inattendu. In celebration of life's "unexpected" delights, Inattendu lets the winemaker bring to light a unique story from a few barrels or lots in the cellar, or a distinctive blend that shines brightly in a given vintage. Inattendu joins our lush, supple, Chemin de Fer (Iron Road), and elegant, spicy Dentelle de Fer (Iron Lace), to round out a mouthwatering trio.

Syrah brings aromas of bacon fat, leather, and anise, followed by spice from Mourvédre. A full-bodied palate of cocoa, bacon, and wet stone finishes with firm, smooth tannins. In keeping with the train images of the other two labels, Inattendu shows train tracks winding through the bucolic countryside of our estate. Purple mountains, scenic vineyards and a quaint chapel are among the enchanting sights we are blessed to enjoy along Justi Creek Railway.

Vineyard Notes

Our estate in Sonoma Valley is rich in historical significance, encompassing organically farmed vineyards and an eco-friendly winery. Justi Creek Vineyards, part of the stunning 95-acre ranch on the outskirts of Glen Ellen, is comprised of three adjacent parcels, formerly parts of Rancho Vallejo and Rancho Los Guilicos. Nancy and John Lasseter embarked on an environmentally sensitive upgrading of their property, lovingly restoring the natural habitat and converting the vineyards exclusively to organic farming practices. The pond was revitalized, and beehives and insectaries were established in order to provide homes for beneficial insects. The ecosystem flourishes under the watchful eye of vineyard manager Phil Coturri. Rhône varietals Syrah and Mourvèdre grow on our seven-acre Creekside Blocks along the east side of the Calabasas Creek on the valley floor. These vines, planted in the rocky soil of an alluvial fan, provide us with the exceptional fruit from which we craft Inattendu. This luscious, fruit-forward wine is assertive yet elegant, allowing us to create a classic blend with an innovative style.
